How long have you been at American Piping Products?

Since 2000.

How long have you been involved as a pipe supplier?

Since the summer of 2000. I had just finished the school year as a high school English teacher. I took a part time job helping out at a pipe distributor calling in trucks and filing orders. My role and my love of shipping pipe grew exponentially!

What’s the biggest obstacle pipe supply companies are facing in the pipe supply market?
Advance scheduling.

What is your most significant professional accomplishment as a pipe supplier?
It’s a team thing at APP. The Operations Department is loaded with people that show up early, stay late, and accomplish great things for our customers all day (and night) long. For me, personally, I’ll be forward-thinking and say my best accomplishment is yet to come.

Tell us about the new saw that was recently installed in Houston. What does this mean for APP and your customers? What kind of saw is it?
We’re proud of our new CNC programmable saw with touch-screen control and automatic, vertical, high-speed production band saw. It can cut up to 24” OD and it has miter capabilities. It can handle parts with compound-miters and everything can be cut in one set-up, allowing quicker turnaround and repeatability required by our customers. Custom-made parts can be stored and retrieved later.
APP has a fleet of saws all over the country. It’s exciting that APP can say “yes” to a wide range of project orders. We love to say that we can take on almost any project, and we love it more now that we can say we do it in-house.

What kind of things do you like to do when you’re not on the job?
Hiking, reading, writing, cooking and watching movies. I love Cardinals baseball, Blues hockey, and Indiana basketball.

Have you got any Oscar picks?
I heard Steven Spielberg took Abraham Lincoln’s actual watch, recorded the sound of it ticking, then used that audio in the movie. So, there is a part in the movie where the audience is hearing the real sound of Lincoln’s watch. That alone should get Spielberg Best Director. I thought Samuel L. Jackson was pretty intense in “Django Unchained,” so I was disappointed he didn’t get a nomination for Supporting Actor.

Since you’re in Texas so often, you’ve probably got an opinion on barbecue. Have you got any recommendations on places to eat next time we’re in Houston?
I reside in St. Louis and work at our Chesterfield headquarters, so it’s a treat every time I go to Houston and I get to enjoy the Gulf seafood. I know it’s a chain restaurant, but I make sure to get to Pappadeaux’s every time I’m there. Here in St. Louis there are plenty of good restaurants too, but nothing beats going to Bob’s Seafood early on a Saturday morning to pick up the best fresh seafood in the area, then cooking it that night.
